Eagle Head as French Hallmark for 18k Gold. Paul Frey Maker's Mark for the Masion where it is created.

This one-of-a-kind antique piece is a remarkable example of jewellery that carries the stories of highly recognized people and historic institutions.

Farmers Loan and Trust Company, founded in New York in 1822, was one of the city's prominent financial institutions. The company later became part of the corporate lineage of Citibank and today's Citi.

During this period, it was a tradition among important businesses and institutions to commission memorable and finely crafted gifts for highly respected clients and associates. These objects were not simply valuable possessions, but personal expressions of recognition and appreciation.

What we have here is an exceptionally well-crafted 18K yellow gold matchstick case commissioned through Van Cleef & Arpels, one of the world's most recognized jewellery houses. The piece is signed VAN CLEEF & ARPELS, and based on the jeweller's hallmark found on the case, it was manufactured by the Parisian workshop of Paul Frey.
What makes this piece particularly interesting is the person whose name it carries.

The case was made for or presented to Henry H. Van Cleef (Henry Howell Van Cleef, 1871–1933), a New York attorney. His intertwined initials, H.H.V.C., are prominently engraved on the front of the case. Inside, his full name, “Henry H. Van Cleef,” is beautifully hand engraved directly above “FARMERS LOAN AND TRUST COMPANY.”
The combination of these original inscriptions, the Van Cleef & Arpels signature, the Paul Frey maker's hallmark, and the association with Farmers Loan and Trust Company and Henry H. Van Cleef gives this piece a character extending far beyond its material value.

It is an exceptional antique object that preserves within its gold craftsmanship a tangible connection between one of New York's historic financial institutions, a distinguished New York attorney, and one of the most celebrated names in French jewellery.
