December
ONE MONTH, THREE UNIQUE BLUE-HUED GEMSTONES
December celebrates three gemstones as its birthstones: Tanzanite, Turquoise and Zircon.
Each stone is distinct, but together they create a palette that is full of charm.
The modern favourite is Tanzanite, prized for its rich, luminous tones of indigo and periwinkle. This rare and captivating stone is a violet-blue variety of zoisite where the colour shifts depending on the light - an effect known as pleochroism. Tanzanite is one of the most recent gemstone discoveries. Named after its geographical origin, Tanzanite can only be found in a small area of the Merelani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania.
Tanzanites are often gently heat-treated to enhance its natural hues. On the Mohs scale, it sits around 6-6.5, meaning it's best worn with care.

Symbolism & Meaning of December's Birthstone
Tanzanites have been described as a stone connected to self-awakening, a uniquely coloured gemstone that evokes intuition, clarity and transformation. The shifting colours can be associated with new perspectives and personal growth.
Wearing the birthstone of your birthday month is often considered good luck. Tanzanite is also a traditional gift for a 24th wedding anniversary.
With December's gemstone trio, it offers a beautiful spectrum of meanings to choose from.

A classic tradition
Turquoise
Turquoise has long been a traditional birthstone for December, known for its lively blues, subtle greens, and naturally matte, opaque appearance. Each stone forms its own patterns, which is why it's often shaped into smooth cabochons to show off its character.
Considered one of the oldest gemstones, Turquoise has appeared in jewellery and artifacts for thousands of year - traced through history from ancient Egypt, Persia and early North America. Across these histories, Turquoise has been used to adorn buildings, weapons and even burials as it was often seen as a symbol of protection, luck and well-being.
Turquoise comes from the Old French term "turques," meaning "Turkish stone," as it was brought to Europe on trade routes.

Zircon
Zircons are natural gemstones that sparkles with crisp, icy tones. It's natural glow is often linked with purity and aligned intentions.
Zircon is one of the oldest minerals ever discovered, having been found in jewellery and artifacts dating back thousands of years.
The name is linked to the Persian word "zargun," meaning "gold hued,"which reflects the many colours Zircon can naturally form. Blue Zircons are one of the most loved shades for its crisp, luminous glow and its association with clarity, intention and fresh starts. Perfect for a month that closes one year and opens for the next.
