Antique Rose-cut Diamond Snake Ring with Dutch Hallmarks
0.16ct | SZ 10.5This ring is an excellent antique example of a snake ring, crafted in 14K yellow gold in a knot-like movement, and set atop its head with a striking, 0.16ct rose-cut natural diamond. There is an oak leaf hallmark on the outer shank, indicating that it was assayed in the Netherlands between 1906 and 1953, but the design and diamond choice strongly suggest that it was made before 1915.
The snake motif has captured the imagination of jewellers and designers for millenia, seemingly never going out of style. And its not hard to see why: the twisting, sinuous body and head of the serpent offer limitless design and gem-setting options. Not to mention, of course, all of the symbolism and meaning that various cultures have attached to the snake.
